Three Great Hiking Trails Around Las Cruces

1. Dripping Springs Trail

Enjoy this 2.7 mile moderately-trafficked out-and-back trail located near Las Cruces. It features a waterfall, and a plethora of stunning views, especially past the old Boyd Sanatorium.

It’s considered an easy-to-moderate level hike, and is accessible year-round. Ideal for nature trips, hiking, and birding. The trail has several shaded benches for breaks. There’s a $5 parking fee at the trailhead.

2. Pine Tree Trail

Challenge yourself to a moderate level hike that reaches a peak of 6,800 feet. It’s a 3.9 mile heavily trafficked loop trail on the back-east side of the Organ Mountains, near Las Cruces. It boasts beautiful wildflowers, and breathtaking vistas.

If you’re new to this trail, attack it counter-clockwise so that the most difficult portion of the hike is at the beginning. The first third of the hike is steep but well-maintained with stairs of rocks to climb, and some intermittent shade. There’s a $5 parking for the day.

3. Baylor Pass Trail

If you’re a seasoned hiker you might enjoy this lung-busting jaunt into the heart of the Organ Mountains, rewarding your sweat with stunning vistas in all directions.

Start out in the morning, to beat the heat, because this 6.9 mile hike is challenging. After making modest elevation gains over the first mile, the trail switchbacks up the head of the canyon to Baylor Pass, gaining almost 1,700 feet total.

Once atop the pass, savor panoramic vistas of Las Cruces and the town of White Sands.
